Salary Budget: ₦700,000 – ₦800,000 (Monthly Gross)
Job Summary
The Head, Pharmacy is responsible for providing strategic, operational, and clinical leadership to the hospitals pharmacy department. The role ensures the safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medications across all hospital units while maintaining regulatory compliance, optimizing inventory management, and driving quality improvement initiatives.
Working closely with the Clinical Director and hospital leadership, the Head, Pharmacy will oversee departmental planning, staff development, clinical integration, procurement, and operational efficiency, fostering a high-performing, patient-centered pharmacy service.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Department Management
Develop and implement the departments vision, strategic plan, and annual objectives aligned with the hospitals mission.
Lead departmental budgeting, procurement planning, and operational policy development.
Collaborate with hospital leadership to ensure effective integration of pharmacy services into overall clinical care delivery.
Clinical & Pharmaceutical Oversight
Provide expert pharmaceutical input on complex clinical cases and actively participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds.
Promote the safe, rational, and evidence-based use of medications across all hospital units.
Lead initiatives in antimicrobial stewardship, medication reconciliation, and pharmacovigilance.
Monitor drug utilization trends and guide cost-effective formulary management decisions.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
Ensure full compliance with Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), NAFDAC regulations, and international best practices (e.g., JCI, WHO).
Lead internal audits, inspections, and continuous quality improvement programs.
Maintain accurate records and enforce strict controls for narcotics and other controlled substances.
Staff Leadership & Development
Supervise, train, mentor, and appraise pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and interns.
Coordinate continuing education, CPD programs, and in-house training sessions.
Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and excellence within the pharmacy team.
Operational Management
Oversee procurement, storage, and inventory of pharmaceuticals to ensure availability and minimize wastage.
Ensure adherence to cold chain management, stock rotation, and expiry monitoring protocols.
Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to optimize pharmacy workflow and service delivery.
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Qualifications
Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D).
Masters degree in Clinical Pharmacy, Healthcare Management, or related field is an added advantage.
Full registration and valid license from the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN).
Experience
Minimum of 10 years post-NYSC hospital pharmacy experience, with at least 5 years in a senior or managerial role.
Proven expertise in clinical pharmacy, pharmacotherapeutics, and hospital pharmacy operations.
Experience in regulatory compliance, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary clinical collaboration.
Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership, strategic planning, and decision-making abilities.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and mentoring skills.
Proficiency in Hospital Information Systems (HIS), pharmacy management software, and Microsoft Office.
Knowledge of Nigerian healthcare regulations, pharmaceutical governance, and operational standards.
